Annual turnover is currently about £8,000, with a reserve of some £7,000. £5,000 of pump-priming funds were provided by the Parish Council. This debt of honour was later repaid by funding ten public notice boards in the parish.
£3,000 was also given to the school to help in its role of communication. In late 2000 we gave just over £1,000 for the Castle Grounds notice board, and at Christmas 2009 DN contributed £200 towards the Market Place Christmas tree. Funding is now almost entirely by advertising revenue. Monthly adverts are charged at £20 per month for a quarter page, and £15 per month for 1/6 page, with an extra charge of £10 if copy is not camera-ready. Inserts are charged at £35. Currently, such is the demand for space that it needs to be reserved months ahead and is mostly reserved for locally-based enterprises, and adverts can appear for only three consecutive months. Annual adverts are charged from £65 for 1/6 page, and space is now fully booked for 2010. Capital equipment is limited to a Risograph printing machine (based in the Windmill Centre), replaced in 2009 at a cost of just under £3000; a laptop computer, costing £500; and four electric staplers, costing some £20 each. The editorial team use their own computers, though some software and hardware have been paid for. |
