DEDDINGTON TO BE UK'S FIRST ALL-FIBRE TELEPHONE EXCHANGE
News came this week that Deddington has been chosen to pilot the first all-fibre telephone and broadband service in the UK. After being shortlisted last autumn Deddington was chosen because it is the right size (1440 telephone lines) for the pilot.
Over the next months BT Openreach (which manages the UK's phone and broadband network) will bring fibre-optic to all premises in the area - see map here. The super-fast 100MB/s service will be available from 2013.
A fibre connection will often run faster than the internet can provide the data, at least for a single activity/download/video stream. However, it won't bog down as much with multiple things going on at once. Existing services are unaffected and if you don't want to switch to the new service you don't have to.
BT and other ISPs will charge for the new high-speed service - £10-20 per month more seems likely. You will need also need a new modem. More details as they become available ...The DN complements other local sources of information, such as our sister sites Deddington OnLine (DoL), which provides longer-term, historical information, archives and present resources; and Deddington OnAir (DonA), our new community radio station.
