Deddington in pictures

A series of pictures of what's happening in Deddington about now
Our stand at the Calor Oxfordshire Village of the Year competition, Yarnton Village Hall, 28 June 2008. Deddington was the winner in the Cherwell section, and the overall county-wide winner was Woodcote in south Oxfordshire.
CONGRATULATIONS PAT!
Pat Brittain has just been awarded an MBE for voluntary service to the community in the Queen's Birthday Honours announced 14 June 2008. Many congratulations! Pat, who heads up the collation and distribution team of DN, is seen left in one of her regular spots in the Church kitchen.

Also in the pic, with Ruth Johnson and Josie Stevens, is Hugo Brunner, Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, who was awarded a KCVO in the same honours list. (Pic Christopher Hall)

PTA FETE

The PTA fete was held on 14 June, in glorious weather. New attractions this year included inviting the children to handle exotic reptiles and creepy crawlies, and digital Scalextric racing. Traditional favourites included tug-of-war and egg throwing. The Deddington red hot skippers were there to provide extra entertainment!

PTA WALK

The Primary School PTA held its annual walk, again in fantastic weather, on 18 May. Over 350 walkers took part, over one of three routes: the Kiddy Route, Hempton/Barford loop or the full 12 mile Circular Walk.

TEEN SCENE OPENING; The Teen Scene at the Windmill Centre was also officially opened on 18 May 2008 by young Deddingtonians who had worked with the Parish Council on the choice of equipment:

TREES RETURN

Remember the story last month about the second diseased chestnut being removed from the Market Place? Shock, horror, here's its replacement being delivered, not a disease resistant chestnut as we had been led to believe, but one of OCC's Millennium oaks, celebrating 1000 years of Oxfordshire history. And even more surprising, the replacement tree for the small green outside the Post Office – a styraciflua acalycina or liquidambar – appeared in early June. (Pic Vivian Hall)

Not a tree hugging ceremony, but Primary School children at school assembly, 22 May with Vicar Hugh White celebrating Corpus Christi around the new oak tree. (Pic Christopher Hall)

LEAD GONE MISSING

The theft of lead from roofs is a growing problem, not just in Deddington. Thieves stripped the porch over Castle Antiques in High Street about a month ago. Had they not been disturbed by James Greernwood who lives in the flat above, the lead above the shop window would have gone too.
