Deddington in pictures 2008

A series of pictures of what's happening in Deddington about now

PRIMARY SCHOOL PTA

Once again the school children have created their own Christmas cards, in 8 different designs; they are of the highest quality and only £2.50 for a pack of 8. To order, email Janet Watts on janet@janetwatts6.wanadoo.co.uk or fill out the order form and drop it off at school reception along with your cheque made payable to ‘Deddington PTA’. The cards can also be viewed on the school website: www.deddington.ik.org and they will be on sale in Deddington Church at the Farmers’ Market on Saturday 22 November.

THE QUEEN AND I ...

Anne Waters, our local Fire Chief, receives her MBE from the Queen. Her achievement was in recognition of Anne's work to get women into the Fire Service.

FARMERS' MARKET PRESENTATIONS
Local recipients of the Farmers' Market £200 cheques in September 2008 with the chairman, Althea Wood: Babies & Toddlers Group, Boys' Brigade, Brownies, Church, Cub Scouts, Village Nursery, Friendship Club, Guides, Barford and Deddington Rainbows, Scouts, Daycare Centre, Primary School PTA and the Youth Club
Stallholder Jane Le Gallaudec receives a £200 cheque from Althea Wood on behalf of the 'Help the Heroes' campaign. Jane's son was recently injured in the Iraq war. Also in the picture are members of the Market Management Committee: James Privett, Chloë Smith, Kevin Mayo, Geoff Todd, Pat Swash, Linda Davies and Doug Rose.

BENEFICE WORKERS
Clare Newcome is a new full-time Benefice youth worker working with young people from Deddington, Barford and the Warriner School. Clare reports that the youth groups share bonding sessions so that they have positive experiences in which to be healthy mentally and spiritually.

In April Jon Cardy, the Warriner Youth Worker, and Clare took a group of six young people to the Lake District for three days for a session of friendship and fun. They had a fantastic time enjoying high ropes, walking, bonfires, good food and DVDs. And 15 members of the youth group took part in a sleepover in Deddington Church on 5 October.

PARISH PRODUCE SHOW
The Parish Produce Show, the first for 45 years, was held in the Parish Church on 6 September (for full details of class winners, see the October 08 issue of DN). Pics show (clockwise): a buzzy scene in the Church as parishioners examine the produce on show; Florence and Charlie Tuthill's entry, winner of the children's Vegetable Animal class; and Michael Allbrook, one of the show committee, makes a finishing touch to the display of roses. The show attracted 68 entries from Deddington, 8 from Hempton, 12 from Clifton and 27 from outside the parish. It is hoped to make the show parish only in the future.

FOOTBALL RETURNS TO THE CASTLE
Colts U-9 Cheetahs in action against Chasewell Park, the Colts’ first game back at the Castle Grounds after a five-year gap. Unfortunately a 4–0 defeat, but it was a great day for all, made even better by the sun appearing for the first time in September.

Thanks to everyone who over the past year has had some input into getting this project to fruition (especially those still recovering from hay-making last summer, and more recently those who sat astride a massive roller for hours giving a few moles a headache!).

VANDALISM
Vandalism at the Windmill Centre all-weather court (left) and the Holly Tree Club (below) earlier this summer. Repairs to the all-weather court will cost in the region of £1400. It seems that whatever is laid on for the youth of today, it's still considered fair game to have a go at whatever is not freely available. The court is kept locked and available for hire for a purpose: it's a hugely expensive surface which has to be looked after and not trashed with beer cans and fag ends!

CLOCK HANDS REPLACED
And the clock hands are replaced on 6 October (pic Colin Robinson)
For some time we were missing a hand on the southern face of the church clock. On 28 August the remaining one was taken away to have a balancing partner made. It should be returned in a couple of weeks' time so we will have a clock face in full working order. CALOR VILLAGE OF THE YEAR
Presentations in the Calor Village of the Year Competition: Deddington was the £500 winner in the Cherwell category. Paul Blacklock, Marketing Manager of Calor, presents the plaque to Mary Robinson. Also in the picture: Jim Flux, Don Anderson and Brigadier Ian Inshaw, High Sheriff of Oxfordshire.

Our stand at the Calor Oxfordshire Village of the Year competition, Yarnton Village Hall, 28 June 2008. Deddington was the winner in the Cherwell section, and the overall county-wide winner was Woodcote in south Oxfordshire.

CONGRATULATIONS PAT!
Pat Brittain has just been awarded an MBE for voluntary service to the community in the Queen's Birthday Honours announced 14 June 2008. Many congratulations! Pat, who heads up the collation and distribution team of DN, is seen left in one of her regular spots in the Church kitchen.

Also in the pic, with Ruth Johnson and Josie Stevens, is Hugo Brunner, Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, who was awarded a KCVO in the same honours list. (Pic Christopher Hall)

PTA FETE

The PTA fete was held on 14 June, in glorious weather. New attractions this year included inviting the children to handle exotic reptiles and creepy crawlies, and digital Scalextric racing. Traditional favourites included tug-of-war and egg throwing. The Deddington red hot skippers were there to provide extra entertainment!

PTA WALK

The Primary School PTA held its annual walk, again in fantastic weather, on 18 May. Over 350 walkers took part, over one of three routes: the Kiddy Route, Hempton/Barford loop or the full 12 mile Circular Walk.

TEEN SCENE OPENING; The Teen Scene at the Windmill Centre was also officially opened on 18 May 2008 by young Deddingtonians who had worked with the Parish Council on the choice of equipment:

TREES RETURN

Remember the story last month about the second diseased chestnut being removed from the Market Place? Shock, horror, here's its replacement being delivered, not a disease resistant chestnut as we had been led to believe, but one of OCC's Millennium oaks, celebrating 1000 years of Oxfordshire history. And even more surprising, the replacement tree for the small green outside the Post Office – a styraciflua acalycina or liquidambar – appeared in early June. (Pic Vivian Hall)
